1) Dr. Soumya Swaminathan Appointed As Principal Advisor At Ministry Of Health & Family Welfare For National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme
Professor Dr. Soumya Swaminathan has been appointed as the Principal Advisor at the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme on a pro bono basis. She will provide technical advice on the overall strategy to achieve program goals, suggest policy directions and necessary course corrections for optimal outcomes, and advise on research strategy. She will also assist in the formation of expert groups with top talent globally. Additionally, she will support the Union Health Ministry, state officials, and development partners in assessing the impact of the programme. Prof. Swaminathan is a former Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization and has also served as the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) previously.

2) India, Russia Set Target Of 100 Bn Dollars Trade By 2030 During 22nd Annual Summit In Moscow
India and Russia have agreed to set the trade target to 100 billion dollars by 2030. The two countries signed nine documents for cooperation in different fields, including MoUs in the areas of Environment and Climate Change, Cartography, Polar Research, Investment, Trade, and Pharma. New Delhi and Moscow have also inked an MoU on cooperation in the field of Broadcasting between Prasar Bharati and TV Novosti. Additionally, the summit included discussions on political cooperation, economic engagement, trade, capital linkages, energy, science and technology cooperation, defence, and security. The Prime Minister raised the issue of the early discharge of Indian nationals who have been misled into the service of the Russian army, with the Russian side promising early discharge. The two leaders also discussed the proposed Chennai-Vladivostok Eastern Corridor and the importance of fertilizer supply from Russia to India.

3) Gautam Gambhir Appointed As Indian Men’s Cricket Team Head Coach
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former batter and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the senior men’s team. BCCI secretary Jay Shah made this announcement, with Gambhir replacing Rahul Dravid as head coach. Gambhir will officially begin his tenure in July and will serve until December 31, 2027, which marks the year of the next ODI World Cup. Although Gambhir has never formally coached a team, he has been associated with IPL franchises Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders as a mentor.
4) Lamine Yamal Becomes Youngest-Ever Goalscorer in Euro History as Spain Knocks France Out
Spain’s 16-year-old winger Lamine Yamal has made history by becoming the youngest-ever goalscorer in the history of men’s Euro, scoring his first Euro goal in Spain’s 2-1 Euro 2024 semi-final win against France. He broke the record previously held by Johan Vonlanthen of Switzerland. Yamal is also the youngest player to feature in the Euros and is currently the joint assist leader of the tournament with three assists.
5) Mutual Recognition Agreement Between India and Taiwan for Organic Products
The Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for organic products between India and Taiwan has been implemented during the 9th Working Group on Trade Meeting in New Delhi. The implementing agencies are the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India, and the Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Taiwan. This agreement allows for the mutual recognition of organic products, simplifying compliance requirements and enhancing trade opportunities.

6) Sri Lanka Reaches Out to OPEC Fund for Water Security Project
Sri Lanka held talks with the OPEC Fund for International Development for 100 million US dollars in assistance for a water security project. The Mahaweli water security investment programme currently funded by over 300 million dollars from the Asian Development Bank, aims to deliver water from the Moragahakanda Reservoir to Hurulu and Mahakandara Reservoirs.
7) Zydus Lifesciences Gets USFDA Nod to Market Chronic Heart Failure Treatment Drug
Zydus Lifesciences Ltd has received final approval from the US health regulator to market its generic Sacubitril and Valsartan tablets combination used to treat chronic heart failure in adults. The drug will be manufactured at the group’s formulation manufacturing facility in Moraiya, Ahmedabad.
8) Central Asian Countries and Azerbaijan Begin Military Exercises in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Defense announced the start of joint military exercises – ‘Birlestik-2024’ (Association-2024) – by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The exercises involve four thousand military personnel and up to 700 pieces of military equipment.
9) Jasprit Bumrah, Smriti Mandhana Clinch ICC Player of the Month Awards
India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and batter Smriti Mandhana have clinched the ICC Player of the Month awards in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, for June. Bumrah was awarded Player of the Tournament for his performance in India’s T20 World Cup campaign, while Mandhana was recognized for her batting performances in India’s ODI series victory over South Africa.
