1) Thomas Muller Announces Retirement from International Football After UEFA Euro 2024

German footballing great Thomas Muller announced his retirement from international football after the UEFA Euro 2024 concluded with Spain winning the continental tournament for the fourth time. The 34-year-old played 131 times for the national side and scored 45 goals while winning the FIFA World Cup 2014. Müller made his debut for the German national team on 3 March 2010 in a 1-0 defeat to Argentina. He played in four World Cups and four European Championships with the DFB team. At the 2010 World Cup, in which Germany came third, Müller won the Golden Boot as top scorer and was also voted best young player of the tournament.

2) Unacademy COO Jagnoor Singh Quits, Gaurav Munjal & Sumit Jain To Take Charge

Edtech unicorn Unacademy’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jagnoor Singh has stepped down from his role. Co-Founder Gaurav Munjal, along with recently promoted partner Sumit Jain, will directly manage offline business operations. Singh will serve his notice period and undergo a six-month transition phase. Last month, Hemesh Singh, co-founder of Unacademy, resigned from his position as the edtech firm’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to transition into an advisory role. Jain succeeded Hemesh Singh as a co-founder and currently serves on the startup’s board. Formerly the CEO of Graphy, a SaaS platform for creators and educators, Jain was promoted to a partner role in August last year.

3) Camlin Founder Subhash Dandekar Dies

Subhash Dandekar, the founder of stationery brand Camlin, passed away at the age of 86. After selling the popular artwork brand to Japan’s Kokuyo, Dandekar was serving as the chairman emeritus of Kokuyo Camlin. Camlin was founded in 1931 by brothers D P Dandekar and G P Dandekar. The company was recognised as a private company in 1946 and later turned into a public limited company in 1998. Under Subhash Dandekar, the company expanded and diversified to art materials from just stationery products and was renamed Camlin in 1960. In 2011, Kokuyo Co, a leading Japanese stationery maker, acquired more than 50% stake in Camlin.

4) AO Smith Buys HUL’s Pureit Business in India for ₹601 Crore

Packaged consumer goods company Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) announced the sale of its water purification business Pureit in India to A. O. Smith Corp. at an enterprise value of $72 million or ₹601 crore. This is part of a larger deal that saw A.O. Smith purchase the Pureit business in south Asia from HUL parent Unilever for approximately $120 million. Pureit was first launched in Chennai in 2004—it offers a broad range of residential water purification solutions, primarily in India. The acquisition of Pureit is projected to close by the end of 2024.

5) Centre Clears Appointment of Two New Judges in SC

The Central government has notified the appointments of Jammu & Kashmir High Court Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan as judges of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the appointments of the two judges. The apex court will now function at its full strength of 34 judges, once the two are sworn in. Justice Singh has been serving as Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court since February 2023. While Justice Mahadevan has been serving as Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court since May 2024.

6) Estonia’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas Steps Down to Become EU’s Foreign Policy Chief

Kaja Kallas has officially resigned as Estonia’s prime minister to become the European Union’s foreign policy chief later this year. Kallas — the Baltic nation’s first female PM — handed in her formal resignation to President Alar Karis. Under Kallas, Estonia has been one of Europe’s most vocal backers of Ukraine following the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. In her new role, Kallas will replace Spain’s Josep Borrell, who has served as the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy since 2019.

7) Singapore and Thailand Conclude Joint Naval Exercise

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) concluded ‘Exercise Singsiam’. Held in Sattahip, Thailand, the exercise saw the participation of the RSN’s Victory-class missile corvette RSS Valiant, and Independence-class littoral mission vessel RSS Indomitable. The RTN participated with a Naresuan-class frigate HTMS Taksin, an Adulyadej-class frigate HTMS Bhumibol Adulyadej, one Dornier-228 Maritime Patrol Aircraft, and one S-70B naval helicopter. This year’s edition also included a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) shore planning exercise. Exercise Singsiam is in its 21st edition since its inauguration in 1981.

8) Bhavtegh Shoots Silver as Junior World Cup Concludes in Porpetto

Bhavtegh Singh Gill secured a silver medal in the men’s skeet event, earning India their second medal of the competition as the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup concluded in Porpetto, Italy. The Indian shooter, who won silver at last year’s Junior Asian Championships, scored 52 in the six-man final, finishing behind American Benjamin Keller, who took gold with 56 out of 60 clay targets. Bhavtegh’s achievement, along with the bronze medal won by Sabeera Haris in the junior women’s trap earlier, helped India secure third place in the medal standings, behind the leading nations USA and Italy.

9) Metsola Re-elected European Parliament President

Roberta Metsola has been re-elected president of the European Parliament for the next two years and a half, marking the beginning of the 10th legislature in Strasbourg. The 45-year-old Christian Democrat from Malta secured 562 votes in favour out of the 623 ballots cast by the newly-elected lawmakers, a comfortable victory that easily surpasses the necessary majority. Irene Montero, the symbolic challenger presented by the Left, obtained only 61 votes. Metsola was first elected in January 2022, following the sudden passing of her predecessor, David Sassoli.

0) Sri Lanka and US to Enhance Cooperation on Maritime Security

Sri Lanka and the United States have resolved to enhance cooperation on maritime security aimed at a safe maritime domain in the Indian Ocean, including through activities undertaken under Sri Lanka’s tenure as Chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). Both countries affirmed the US commitment to a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Colombo welcomed the planned arrival of the fourth High Endurance US Coast Guard Cutter transferred through the US Excess Defence Articles programme and a King Air aircraft to strengthen Sri Lanka’s maritime domain awareness and respond to humanitarian and post-disaster needs, totaling $30.18 million.
